Abstract: In the first chapter of AJ 8, Josephus stressed that Solomon was a great king of great wisdom and spiritual gifts. But Josephus even used other non-Biblical references and claimed that Solomon could cast out demons. The author thus investigates the historical contexts that caused Josephus to reach compromise with the interest of his pagan readers. The author also discusses whether Josephus was referring to an individual case or a wider phenomenon. Moreover, Josephus' emphasis might have reflected the current Graeco-Roman practice of exorcism.
