Title: Die Essener-Berichte des Flavius Josephus. Quellenstudien zu den Essenertexten im Werk des jüdischen Historiographen
Author: Bergmeier, Roland
Pages: 175
Type: Book
Year: 1993
Abstract: "After a survey of texts about the Essenes in the works of Josephus, this volume situates them in the context of ancient reports about the Essenes (especially Philo 's accounts). Next it considers the relationship between the Qumran community and the Essenes, with particular attention to the problem of Josephus' sources. Then it discusses linguistic peculiarities as indications that Josephus used sources. Bergmeier, author of Glaube als Gabe nach Johannes (1980), concludes that Josephus composed his reports about the Essenes on the basis of several, mainly non-Jewish sources, and that this fact helps to explain both the similarities to the Pythagoreans and the differences from the Qumran community".
