Abstract: The author claims that common sources are needed in order to explain the similarities between different accounts on the Essenes. The author claims that the accounts of Philo and Josephus were based on one common Hellenistic Jewish source. But Hippolytus' account (Haer 9.18.2-29.4) was simply Josephus' BJ 2:119-166, and Hippolytus reshaped Josephus' accounts with his own apologetic interests, style and theology. Hippolytus' account thus should not be used as evidence for the eschatology of the Essenes.
