Abstract: The article analyzes the speech of Nicolas of Damascus in AJ 16: 31-57 as a fascinating piece of rhetoric in the larger context of Jewish apologetics towards the Romans in the writing of Josephus. Nicolas' speech praised the Romans, emphasizing that Jews were similar to other people. He not only valued Roman politics but also argued against anti-Jewish stereotype. Its content thus shows that it is mainly a piece of deliberate and epideictic rhetoric.
