These Greek word, however, represent the socio-cultural world of Hellenistic slave system, systems that were very different from that of ancient Israel. In addition, the Hebrew 'bd was used in a much wider variety of ways than the Greek world that translate it. An important issue, then, is how one ought to understand Greek slave terminology when it is used byHellenistic Jews, especially when such terms appear in contexts clearly influenced b< the bile. In his paper W. looks at the most important Greek words used by Hellenistic Jewish authors to designate slaves. The Greek translations of the Jewish bible, Josephus and Philo are examined. Jews, from an earl period, were intimately familiar with Hellenistic slave practices. Greek in the Hellenistic period also tended more and more to use various words for slaves as synonyms, a trend also evident in Hellenistic Jewish literature. This evidence suggests that the Hellenistic Jewish translators and authors, when they used these word, invested them with the social and cultural meaning of the Hellenistic Mediterranean, not those of ancient Israel." |
