| Title: The Depiction of the Jews in Acts Pages: 631-654 Type: Generic Year: 1991 Abstract: "This study enters the discussion of Luke's attitude toward Jews and Judaism in Lk-Acts by examining the stylized way in which Jews are often represented in Acts and by relating questions of genre to the way Jews are depicted. It first analyzes the riot scene in Acts 17:1-9 and similar scenarios elsewhere in Acts and identifies a three-part pattern (positive missionary activity, opposition and constriction, release and expansion) that dominates Acts 13:13-28:31. Then it discusses scholarly interpretations of negative portrayals of Jews, the genre of Acts, and Luke's pro-Roman apologetic motif. With respect to the depiction of Jews, Luke has taken over a tendentious perspective regarding mobs and the treat of stasis that closely parallels the ""imperial sociology"" of Roman historians. Luke's three-pronged apologetic intent is to demonstrate that (1^) Christians are model citizens, (2) Jews are prone to violence and sedition, and (3) Christians are the rightful heirs of pristine Judaism and Israelite tradition. - C.R.M.
