| Title: Temple Fortresses in Jerusalem. Part I: The Ptolemaic and Seleucid Akras Pages: 29-40 Type: Generic Year: 1989-1990 Abstract: "This article evaluates source material for two temple fortresses to understand better their nature, extent, and location. W. concludes that the Ptolemaic Citadel, mentioned in 2 Maccabees, Josephus, possibly Sir 50:1-4, and the Letter of Aristeas, was built shortly after the Ptolemaic occupation of Palestine at the beginning of the third century B.C.E. 1 Maccabees and Josephus differ over the location of the Seleucid Akra in relation to the Temple and to the lower city. W. argues that the Akra stood on the eastern ridge south of the Temple enclosure and may have overlooked the Temple wall but not the Temple itself. [Kathleen M.
