| Title: The Sabbath in the Writings of Josephus Pages: 363-390 Type: Generic Year: 1998 Abstract: "Harrington, David J. in: NTAb 43,2 (1999) 346: This paper reviews Josephus' references to Sabbath practices, and argues that he was quite conscious of the Sabbath's significance and used it to advantage for his own ends. He seems to have a particular dislike for any who would compromise in reference to its. Bus his accounts may tell us more about Josephus that about the person being described. Josephus uses Sabbath observance as a barometer of piety. It serves him as a label with which to tag people according to his own prejudices. However, there is no reason to doubt that Josephus valued Sabbath observance, wished to be known as an observant Jew, and envisioned an observant Jewish nation within the Roman empire. No evidence argues that he was somewhat cynical in his use of Sabbath observance as a barometer of piety." Keywords: Cultural and Religious History of Ancient Judaism |
