| Title: Cluvius Rufus and Suetonius Pages: 466-482 Type: Generic Year: 1992 Abstract: "The hypothesis proposed by G.B. Townend (cf. APh XXXI p. 195) that a chronique scandaleuse by Cluvius Rufus was the source of much of the Greek in Suetonius' Caesares should be rejected. Suetonius' Greek quotations are not always connected with the most hostile presentation of the emperors and do not obviously derive from a work which provided no secure context for its material. Moreover, if Cluvius Rufus is the probable source of the account of Caligula's assassination in Josephus' Jewish Antiquities 19, he most probably wrote annalistic history."
