Abstract: "In the writings of Philo and Josephus and in apocryphal, pseudepigraphical, and rabbinic literature, repentance was to a greater or lesser extent seen as a meritorious work. Rabbinic literature seems more lenient toward "sinners", perhaps under the influence of the school of Hillel. The Synoptic Gospels and Paul's writings represent the stricter views current in pre-A.D. 70 Judaism". - D.J.H.
