| Title: "The relationships between Pharisees and Chief Priests. Some observations on the texts in Matthew, John and Josephus" Pages: 506-522 Type: Generic Year: 1996 Abstract: "Tromp, J. in: JSJ 28,2 (1997) 232: The generic distinction between Pharisees and chief priests, suggested by the juxtaposition of both groups in Matthew and John, is also made by Josephus on several occasions. The Pharisees ""are presented as a group which exercise power through influence on the priests but not because of any political power of their own"". Josephus' portrayal is basically accurate and shows that Matthew's and John's portrayala reflect something of the actual religious and political dynamics in the first century."
