Some of his actions were simply despicable, others are understandable given their historical context. Flavius Josephus, prejudiced by the history of his own ancestors, recounted some actions of Herod which are probably not matters of historical fact and are quite negative, but also has some very positive things to say about him. Herod's total dedication to the welfare of his people and the splendor of his realm, as well as his faithful and profitable political alliance with Rome, led most Jews to appreciate him as a great ruler who did many good things for them. A critical reading of the sources shows that his negative side, though very real, was outweighed by his positive side, and that he does deserve his epithet ""the Great.""
