Abstract: "Harrington, Daniel J. in: NTAb 43,1 (1999) 126: Josephus (see War 2:531,544) used the term stratarches not as the technical equivalent of a specific rang in the Roman army but rather as a more general word for ""commander"" or ""leader"". Thus Turannius Priscus and Priscus were one and the same person. While Priscus held the ""rank"" of praefectus castrorum (Stratopedarches), his ""assignment"" at the time of Cestius Gallus' Judean campaign was as the commander (stratarches) of a vexillation from the Sixth Legion. // Hilhorst, A. in: JSJ 30,2 (1999) 251: As can be shown from Philo and epigraphical material, the rather rare term stratarches was not used as the technical equivalent for any particular rank in the Roman army, but rather as a more general world for 'commander' or 'leader'."". Therefore there is no need to view the stratopedarches (perfectus castrorum) Tyrannius Priscus mentioned in Josephus B.I. 2.531 and the stratarches Priscus ib. 2.544 as separate persons."
