Böcher and presented in 1993 to the Evangelical theological faculty at Mainz, this volume first considers the image of the prophet in Palestinian Judaism at the time of John the Baptist. Then it discusses the portrayals of John the Baptist as a prophet in various strands on the Synoptic tradition (Mk, Q, L). Finally it discusses particular aspects of John 's life and activity in the context of the lives of the biblical prophets: origin, birth, and youth; form, content, and place of commissioning; clothing; food; place of public activity; preaching; and violent fate. Tilly concludes that John the Baptist would have been understood by his contemporaries as a prophet on the basis of the forms of his appearance and preaching."
