Abstract: "in: AnPh 67 (1996) 206: At Josephus, AI 4,200; 4,203; 4,305-308; 5, 68-70; 5,115-116; and 5, 120-137 the major variations from the scriptural accounts may reflect arguments or exegesis used by Jews to oppose Samaritan claims, although Josephus may not have realized their significance. // in: JSJ 27 (1996) 472-473: Discussion of various passages in Josephus' Jewish Antiquities where Josephus is retelling parts of Dtn, Jos, and Jdc. Major variantions from the scriptural accounts reflect arguments of exegesis used by Jews to oppose Samaritan claims. It is very questionable, however, whether Josephus himself was responsible for originating potentially anti-Samaritan versions of scriptural narratives. Josephus shows no particular concern to denigrate or attack the Samaritans of his own day. It is very likely that Josephus is simply repeating some slanted versions of scriptural accounts that he had picked up in his younger days. The origins of such accounts would lie in past disputes with Samaritans and the anti-Samaritan propaganda of previous generations. Josephus himself may well have passed these versions of scriptural stories on to his readers without realizing their original overtones and significance."
