| Title: "Literacy, textual communities, and Josephus' Jewish War" Pages: 123-142 Type: Generic Year: 1998 Abstract: "Matthews, Christopher R. in: NTAb 43,1 (1999) 126: This study of the role of literacy in the Jewish War complements the work of those scholars who have attempted to explain the First Jewish Revolt in terms of the socio-economic context of pre-A.D. 70 Roman Palestine. It applies and documents B. Stock's four stage sequence in the development of a ""textual community"" to Josephus' presentation in War under three headings: literacy increases in actual or symbolic value, a new ""philosophy"", and establishment response. It concludes that the textual community paradigm highlights the genuine religious sentiments of the various rebel groups described in War, and that Josephus' account is typical of institutional attempts to suppress textual communities by labeling them heretical and offering a counter interpretation of the sacred texts in question."
