Abstract: Harrington, Daniel J. in: NTAb 43.1 (1999), 116: "This investigation of Josephus' retelling (in Ant. 6:282-291) of the story of David's initial sparing of Saul's life according to 1 Samuel 24 is divided into three segments: Saul spared, David's speech, and Saul's reply. It concludes with obersavations on the text-form(s) employed by Josephus, his rewriting techniques, and message to his dual audience of cultivated Gentiles and fellow Jews". Kaltner, John in: OTA 22.2 (1999), 321: "A comparison of Josephus' version (Ant. 6.282-291) of the events described in 1 Samuel 24 (as attested by the MT, Codex Vaticanus, the Lucianic version of the LXX, the Vetus Latina, and Targum Jonathan). The details of the story are studied by B. in a way that highlights how Josephus both agrees with and diverges from the biblical source(s). B.'s conclusion addresses three questions he raises at the beginning of his article. First, the issue of which text form(s) Josephus used cannot be resolved with certainty although he seems to prefer LXX, the Lucianic tradition (in particular), over the MT in the Books of Samuel. Second, the distinctiveness of Josephus' version is reflected in the following features: a tendency to streamline by omitting or abridging elements of the biblical text; additions to and elaborations of the biblical account; and other modifications of terminology, style, and content. Third, Josephus' account attempts to send a message to both Gentile and Jewish readers. The former would find the way David's character as presented by him appealing, while the latter group is intended to see the historian's portrayal of David as a form of self-defense on Josephus' part".
