| Title: Elements of Mysticism in the Dead Sea Scrlls Pages: 193-213 Type: Generic Year: 1997 Abstract: "Schweitzer, Steven J. in: OTA 22,1 (1999) 128: T. examines elements within the Scrolls which refer to the interaction between the heavenly and earthly realms. Knowledge can be transmitted between them by either a heavenly descent or a human ascent into the other world. T. explores the connection between the Hebrew Rephaim/Ropheim ""healers"" and its possible Greek translation as therapeutai. The Hebrew term's Aramaic equivalent has interestingly been considered the origin of the word ""Essene."" T. suggests that it was the mystical practices of the Essenes-Qumranites, in particular their healing with roots - as noted in Josephus - ,which may account for this appellation of the isolationist Qumran community." |
