| Title: David's dismissal by the Philistines according to Josephus Secondary Title: TZ Volume: 54 Pages: 111-119 Type: Journal Article Year: 1998 Abstract: Harrington, Daniel J. in: NTAb 43.1 (1999), 116: "1 Samuel 29 tells of David's humiliating, though not unwelcome, dismissal from the Philistine expedition against Israel. This article compares the Josephan version and its biblical source under two headings: David challenged (1 Sam 29:1-5/Ant. 6:351-354a), and David dismissed (1 Sam 29:6-11/Ant. 6:354b-356a). It concludes that Josephus knew 1 Samuel in several textual forms, rewrote the biblical text with various techniques (streamlining, more flowing presentation, etc.), and sought to address both Roman and Jewish readers".
