Philologische Betrachtungen an der Wurzel AGAP Pages: 284-330 Type: Generic Year: 1992 Abstract: "After noting the prominence of a)gapa/w in the NT and raising questions about its background, the article investigates the use of a)gapa/w in profane Greek (semantic neighbors, the root agap-) and in the Septuagint (the root agap- in translations of Hebrew texts and in other writings), and considers the usage of the Septuagint against the background of profane Greek (comparison of semantic fields, translating )hb through agap-). Then it discusses the vocabulary of ""love"" and the theological and ethical significance of a)gap/w and file/w - a comparison, and the significance of a)gapa/w and a)ga/ph. A key theological concept in the NT, a)ga/ph expressed continuity with the OT concept of love in the Septuagint without erecting insuperable barriers against pagan religion and philosophy. - D.J.H."
