| Title: The Origin of the Christian Codex Pages: 263-268 Type: Generic Year: 1994 Abstract: "Every one of the 42 known papyrus fragments of the Gospel is from a codex. This is an astonishing statistic, if we reflect that among non-Christian papyri the roll form predominated for centuries. The motive for the Christian adoption of the codex is found in the fact that it could contain the texts of all four Gospels. No roll could do this. The decision seems to have been prompted by the publication of John (ca. A.D. 100), and the desire to safeguard the then existing four Gospels from either addition or subtraction. - C.R.M."
