Abstract: "Harrington, Daniel J. in: NTAb 43,1 (1999) 125: After discussing the intention and sources of Josephus Jewish War, the article considers his portrayals of the Hasmonean period and of Herod and his time in both Jewish War and Antiquities, and concludes with reflections on his reliability as a historian. // Hieke, Thomas in: OTA 21,3 (1998) 514: S. emphasizes that one first has to ask in which perspective and with which intention Josephus wrote, then which sources he might have used. Only then can one ask about what reliable historical details Josephus may provide. Therefore, S. first treats the intentions behind Josephus' history of the Jewish War. His main source for this was the comprehensive history of Nicolaus of Damascus. Then S. gives an overview of the contents of Bellum Judaicum 1 and Ant. 12-17. For the time between the death of Simon (at the end of 1 Maccabbees, 134 B.C.) and the fall of Masada (74 C.E.) Josephus is our only continuous source for Jewish and Palestinian history, especially for the times and person of Herod the Great. While Josephus acknowledges the positive aspects of this ruler in the Bellum, he paints a very negative picture of Herod in Antiquities. Josephus was a personally engaged writer who sorted and selected his sources in his own way."
