| Title: The Concept of God in the Works of Flavius Josephus Pages: 171-189 Type: Generic Year: 1980 Abstract: "Josephus, tief geprägt von seiner Herkunft, später im steten Kontakt mit der heidnischen Kultur, hat versucht, jüdische religiöse Begrifflichkeit ins Griechische zu tragen. In seiner Gottesauffassung würde er heute als liberaler Jude gelten. - Zwei Tafeln: A. Number of occurrences in Josephus of ho theos, theos, and to theion. - B. Characteristics of God in Josephus (eumeneia, eunoia, pistis, pronoia, eusebeia, boulesis, asebeia; Judge, Omnipotent, Omipresent; Punisher). // In Josephus' writings the presence of the article with theos is usual, and the absence of the article is attributable for particular needs of emphasis, nuance, or euphony. The term to theion is generally used by Josephus to mean ""the Deity"", without necessarily any reference to the God of Israel. Josephus' view about God are mostly consistent with the Jewish Scriptures. As a result of his contact with Gentile cultures, and partly because he sought to express his Judaism in terms of Greek culture, Josephus also used non-Jewish and nonscriptural expressions and language. In modern terms Josephus was a liberal Jew. - D.J.H." Keywords: Josephus as Theologian |
