Then following a description of military and political events betweeen 63 and 30 B.C. as the background for Herod the Great's rise of power, it deals with the size, structure, and nature of Herod's army in the period of the Augustan principate as well as the military installations he constructed in his realm, and treats Herod's relation with Jews, Greeks, and Nabateans.
