Abstract: "The narrative of Ant. 13,1-79, properly understood, expresses a propagandistic motif not hitherto noticed in Ant. // Antiquities 13 shows that among the Iudaioi Josephus is addressing are Galileans, Peraeans, and Samaritans. Some of these had to be encouraged not merely to submit to some rabbinic-style leadership, but to observe Jewish law in even the most basic sense. // Josephus' version of the letter of Demetrius I to Jonathan (Ant. 13:48-57; cf. 1 Macc 10:25-45) argues that the Samaritans and Galileans are Iudaioi and so are properly obliged to use Judean law and revere the Judean Temple. This claim is (1) consistent with certain details in Josephus' account in Antiquities 13 of the later Hasmonean conquest of Samaria, Peraea, and Galilee and (2) buttressed by the stories of Jeans and Samaritans in Egypt (13:62-79). That Josephus, writing about A.D. 90, should have needed to argue for the Judaism of Galilee and Peraea is remarkable; that he was inclined to argue the same for the despises Samaritans is no less so. these findings have important historical implications as well as significant consequences for our understanding of Antiquities as a whole.
