| Title: Studies in the Jewish Background of christianity Secondary Title: WUNT 60 Type: Generic Year: 1992 Abstract: "After a 26-page introduction to the Jewish background of Christianity, this volume presents nine studies on politics and sectarianism in Second Temple Judea: Temple and desert; Pharisaic opposition to the Hasmonean monarchy; whether ""kingdom of priests"" was a Pharisaic slogan; the ""contemners of judges and men"" (11 Q Temple 64:12); the identity of the ""scribes"" in the Nt; sacrifice by Gentiles in the Jerusalem Temple; residents and exiles, Jerusalemites and Judeans (Acts 7:4; 2:5, 14); Christian study of the Zealots; and Barnabas and Bar Kokhba. There are also six papers on Josephus and Judean chronology: Joseph ben Illem and the date of Herod' s death; ""Caesarea"" and its ""Isactium"" - epigraphy, numismatics, and Herodian chronology; Pilate' s appointment to office and the chronology of Josephus' Antiquities 18-20; Pilate' s suspension from office - chronology and sources; Ishmael ben Phiabi and the chronology of Provincia Judea; and texts, coins, fashions, and dates - Josephus Life and Agrippa II' s death. All the articles appear in English, though ten were first published in Modern Hebrew. Schwartz is the author of Agrippa II (1990). This collection of essays in English includes 16 articles, all but five previously published by S. in Hebrew or English. The articles have three foci: the development of Second Temple Judaism, Josephus and the history of Judea, and problems of modern historiography.
