S. believes that the author of 4 QMMT, while not a Pharisee, was intentionally writing to forge an alliance with that sect in opposition to the Sadducees and their constituency, the mass of the people. Taking into account other concerns of 4 QMMT as well, he suggests that the text antedates the rise of the Sadducees late in the Hasmonean period. His analysis is in agreement with Josephus' account of an earlier Pharisaic ruling coalition in Jerusalem. - S. J. S." Keywords: Qumran |
