// The negative passages about the Pharisees in Josephus' writings (Ant. 13:171-173m 288, 401-402; 17:41-42) can be attributed to Nicolaus of Damascus; they probably reflect Herod the Great's experiences with the Pharisees' political involvement. Josephus was less cautious in hi s later works than he was in War about suing sources that indicated Pharisaic involvement in politics and even rebellion. - D.J.H. // In this study I propose to examine Josephus' statements regarding the Pharisees, in order to determine to what extent they are his won original compositions or rather taken over from the writings of Nicolaus of Damascus (p. 157) ... It seems, however, that Josephus' evidence may be taken to indicate Pharisaic political involvement especially under Herod, but also later as well, and that this evidence may be accepted with considerable confidence, for it comes to us despite Josephus' own interests (p. 170)."
