Abstract: "The phrasing of Ant. X,80 reflects that while both Jeremiah and Ezekiel were Aaronites, a fact Josephus notes to enhance their status a prophets, only Jeremiah could be called a priest. Ezekiel near became more than a priest by descent. For Josephus to be a priest is a matter of potential. Ezekiel never realized that potential in his captivity. // Josephus' reference to Jeremiah and Ezekiel in Ant. 10:80 should be translated thus: ""Both were priests by descent. But while Jeremiah lived in Jerusalem from the thirteenth y<ear of Josiah's reign until the city and the temple were destroyed, that which happened to this prophet [Ezekiel] we will relate in its proper place."" Josephus phrasing reflects the fact that, although both prophets were Aaronites, only Jeremiah could have functioned as a priest in Jerusalem. - D.J.H.
