| Title: Papyrus Se'elim 13 and the Question of Divorce Initiated by Women in Ancient Jewish Halakha Pages: 377-390 Type: Generic Year: 1998 Abstract: "Stemberger, Günther in: JSJ 30,4 (1999) 488: The papyrus has been interpreted either as a receipt of the Ketubbah payment or as a bill of divorce given by the woman to her husband. There is a basic problem with this second interpretation: Jews following the regular halakah as attested in Josephus and the rabbinic writings would consider a divorce by woman as invalid; children born from a subsequent marriage would be unable to marry within Jewish society. Since our sources never discuss such problems, such an interpretation of the papyrus is unlikely. The 'divorce clause' in the text should therefor be considered as a quotation from the bill of divorce previously given by the husband to his wife."
