| Title: Jewish Historiography and Iconography in Early and Medieval Christianity Secondary Title: "CRI 3,2" Type: Generic Year: 1992 Abstract: "Schreckenberg (pp. 1-138), after an introduction on Josephus as a Hellenistic Jewish author, his objectives and audience, his relationship to the Judaism of his day, his passage about Jesus, and relationship to Luke, comments briefly on twenty-eight Christian writers of the first five centuries who were influenced by Josephus, and on portraits of the historian and depictions of scenes from his works in medieval works, especially miniatures found in medieval manuscripts. Schubert (pp. 141-260), after examining the biblical and rabbinic attitude toward images, discusses decorations found in synagogues, especially at Dura Europos, and Jewish influence on earliest Christian paintings, notably in the Via Latina Catacomb, the Vienna Genesis, and the Ashburnham Pentateuch. He demonstrates that these Christian illustrations reflect not only the biblical text but also an interpretive tradition attested in the Talmud and midrashim. [Louis H.
