| Title: Joash of Judah according to Josephus Secondary Title: The Chronicler as Historian Pages: 301-320 Type: Book Section Year: 1997 Abstract: Steinmann, Andrew E. in: OTA 20.3 (1997), 511: "B. analyzes Josephus' use of sources in his account of Joash, noting that Josephus considered Kings and Chronicles to be equally reliable historical sources. Investigation into Josephus' source texts does not reveal which text-forms he was relying upon in the passage examined. However, there are indication that he did not know of a distinctive LXX reading in 2 Chr 24:3 or of the Chronicles Targum. B. also notes that Josephus freely alternates between Kings and Chronicles, modifying the style and wording for the sake of better Greek style. Josephus likewise rearrange his sources on occasion makes minor additions to the biblical accounts, omits details when his sources conflict, and elaborates on some biblical data. Josephus goes beyond the Bible in his concentration on Jehoida and Joash, presenting the latter as a good man who comes to a bad end at the hand of an outraged deity". Keywords: Antiquities |
