Abstract: Horst, Pieter Willem van der in: JSJ 29.2 (1998), 220: "That the story of Israel's conflict with Amalek in Ex. 17 is retained by Josephus [Ant. III 39-60] is remarkable in view of his tendency to omit stories that might lend support to Gentile claims about Jewish hostility to the rest of mankind. He does, however, his utmost to present the Amalekite war as solely due to the Amalekites' unprovoked aggression against a people that posed no threat to them. Moreover, for Jewish readers Josephus' Amalek story would hold out, in necessarily coded language, the prospect of Rome's eventual defeat".
