| Title: Die Flucht Johanan b. Zakkais aus Jerusalem und die Gründung des 'Lehrhauses' in Jabne Secondary Title: Aufstieg und Niedergang der Römischen Welt: Geschichte and Kultur Roms im Spiegel der neueren Forschung Volume: Prinzipat. 19.2 Pages: 43-101 Type: Book Section Year: 1979 Abstract: Rejects the historicity, on separate grounds, of (a) Yohanan's prediction to Vespasian (the story is dependent upon Josephus') and (b) Yohanan's request for a place to study Torah at Yavneh. Rather, in connection with BJ 4.130, 444; 6.113f. (cf. jTaanit 4.8, fol. 69a; bBer 44a), he follows Alon's argument that Yohanan was forcibly settled and incarcerated, first at Gophna and then at Yavneh. But he rejects Alon's argument that this had to do with a Nazi-like programme to destroy the Jewish race. These were settlements of priests and other Jewish élites. |
