Abstract: "This investigation of three major groups in 1st-century Judaism - priests, Pharisees, and common people - examines first the negative view of each group and then the positive view, noting the bias of the ancient sources (Psalms of Solomon, Dead Sea scrolls, NT, rabbinic writings, Josephus' works) at each point. A search for fair generalizations about the three groups leads to the conclusion that Judaism in the time of Jesus and Paul was a noble religion based on belief in God's mercy and grace, and inculcating in its members virtuous action and consideration toward others. - D.J.H."
