Abstract: "This essay investigates Josephus' version in Ant. 6:1-6 of the accont of the ark's stay in Philistine country according to 1 Samuel 5. It compares Josephus' narrative with the major biblical witness and nonbiblical accounts according to the biblical ordering of the ark's three successive "stations" in Ashdod/Azotus (1 Sam 5:1-6/Ant. 6:1-3), Gath (1 Sam 5:7-9), and Ekron/Ascalon (1 Sam 5:10-12/Ant. 6:4-5a). Josephus has the ark proceed from Azotus to Ascalon and finally to the remaining cities of the Philistine Pentapolis (Ant. 6:5b-6). Josephus' account depended on a text like that of the Lucianic manuscripts of the LXX/Codex Vaticanus as opposed to the MT. Josephus' version presents a streamlined, generalized, clarifying, and verbally varied retelling of the source story". - C. R. M.
