Abstract: "The purpose of the research into the architectural development of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem was to establish the precise location of the original square Temple Mount. The methodological procedure adopted was the following: 1. Review of the relevant historical sources, namely the writings of Josephus and the tractate Middot of the Mishnah. 2. Overview of the previous research (since 1864). 3. Presentation of the critical evidence which led to the location of the 500 cubit square Temple Mount, namely: the step, the excavated ditch, the rockscarp along the northern edge of the raised Moslem platform, the distance between the step and the eastern wall, the masonry of the eastern wall and the bend. 4. Overview of the literary sources relating to building activities on the Temple Mount and proposed identification of historical structures in order to establish a date for the origin of the square Temple Mount, resulting in the proposal that it was constructed during the First Temple period. 5. Presentation of supportive evidence for the boundaries of the square Temple Mount: the location of the Akra, the position of the underground cisterns and the Herodian extension, expecially the location of the underground passageways of Warren' s and Barclay' s Gates in the western wall of the Temple Mount and those of the Double and Triple Gates in the southern wall. 6. The research led unexpectedly to the discovery of an extension to the south of the square Temple Mount during the Hasmonean period. This finding is based on the analysis of the masonry of the eastern wall."
