Abstract: "Kugler, Robert A. in: OTA 22,2 (1999) 323: R. explores the question of whether the testimony regarding the Exodus by the Egyptian priest Manetho (Josephus, Contra Ap. 1.73-90, 227-51) truly represents some of the earliest known anti-Semitic literature, as is commonly thought. R. provides a fresh examination of Manetho's testimony, as well as a comparison of this with the tale told by Hecataeus ofAbdera (Diodorus, Bibliotheca Historica 40:3:1-3) and the other witnesses on the topic preserved by Josephus (i.e., Chaeremon, Lysimachus, and Apion). R.'s comparisons lead to the conclusion that Manetho actually builds on a longstanding Egyptian tradition of the savior king who expels terrorizing invaders by making the tradition refer to Jews. Thus Manetho's account is but the first step toward associating the invaders solely with the Jews, and in that sense is surely anti- Semitic in character."
