The Evidence of Josephus Pages: 1-14 Type: Generic Year: 1995 Abstract: "IZGB 41 (1995/1996), 352: The work of Josephus is a valuable guide to understanding ethnic and cultural identities in Jewish Palestine. Josephus regularly distinguishes Jews from foreigners and also from Greeks. But he also assigns a prominent place to Syrians. In general by ""Greek"" he means simply non-Jewish townsmen, usually citizens of Greek cities. ""Syrians"" are the rural population." Keywords: Cultural and Religious History of Ancient Judaism |
