| Title: Elisha's great deeds according to Josephus (AJ 9,47-94) Secondary Title: Henoch Volume: 18 Pages: 69-110 Type: Journal Article Year: 1996 Abstract: Sievers, Joseph in: JSJ 28.2 (1997), 221: "Begg continues his investigation of distinct portions of Josephus' biblical paraphrase. In the section under study it is impossible to ascertain what biblical text type Josephus was using, although B. notes one agreement with MT against LXX and one tradition in common with TJ and later rabbinic literature. Among Josephus' rewriting techniques, B. finds stylistic modifications, rearrangements, omissions/condensations, and, most prominently, additions/expansions. Many of these changes are intended to clarify matters of Gentile readers and to serve Josephus' apologetic purposes".
Duggan, Michael W. in: OTA 20.2 (1997), 301: "B. compares Josephus' account of Elisha's activities (Ant. 9,47-94) with 2 Kgs 4:1-8:15 according to the following witnesses: MT (BHS), codex Vaticanus, the Lucianic or Antiochene MSS of LXX, and Tg. Jonathan on the Former Prophets. He points out various techniques which Josephus employed in rewriting the narrative. Josephus' rendition of the Elisha story remains faithful to the Jewish-religious message while also addressing the concerns of his Gentile audience". Keywords: Antiquities |
