| Title: The Last Oniad and the Teacher of Righteousness Pages: 30-52 Type: Generic Year: 1997 Abstract: "Harrington, Daniel J. in: NTAb 42,1 (1998) 115: When the Jewish high priest Onias III was murdered in exile near Antioch ca 170 B.C. (see 2 Macc 4:33-34), his infant son survived him (see Ant. 12:237,387). This scion of the Oniad house - perhaps named Simeon III - serves serious consideration in the search for a historical personage with whom to identify the Teacher of Righteousness at Qumran. The Onias who went to Egypt and founded a temple at Leontopolis may not have been Onias III's son. Rather, he appears to have been the son of Simon of Bilgah (see 2 Macc 4:23) and a nephew of Menelaus." Keywords: Qumran |
