| Title: Athaliah's Coup and Overthrow According to Josephus Secondary Title: Anton. Volume: 71 Pages: 191-210 Type: Journal Article Year: 1996 Abstract: Sievers, Joseph in: JSJ 28.2 (1997), 212: "This article compares Ant. 9.140-156 with its biblical antecedents in 2 Kings 11:1-20 and 2 Chr 22:10-23:21 and concludes that Josephus follows more closely the Chronicler's account although he includes some details specific to Kings. Josephus expands on his sources in order to accentuate the dramatic character of the episode. He also emphasizes the hazards involved in departing from strict observance of divine laws. "Overall, the Josephan version of the Athaliah episode which results from both his expansions and compressions of the source material is a somewhat smoother-reading, as well as a more dramatic and psychologized one in which Josephus' ancestors the priests figure more prominently than they do in its Biblical prototypes" [210]".
