| Title: Caesar and Jewish Law Pages: 28-37 Type: Generic Year: 1995 Abstract: "Josephus' document in Antiquities 14:190-198 dealing with Julius Caesar 's attitude towards Jewish law can be regarded as reliable and can safely be used for the reconstruction of Caesar 's position. Caesar 's permission to the Jews to live according to their laws and customs is found consistently from Caesar to Claudius, suggesting that Caesar 's grants to the Jews had legal value. This permission was by no means exceptional. A comparison with Greek epigraphic documents shows that similar permission was very often granted by the Romans to conquered peoples. - C.R.M."
