Es läßt sich nur eine einzige falsche Aussage ausmachen, die jedoch nicht gegen Philipp gerichtet war, sondern in einem bestimmten Darstellungszusammenhang begründet ist. Alle anderen Irrtümer und Widersprüche beruhen auf der, besonders im Detail, nachlässigen Arbeitsweise des Josephus und auf einer charakteristischen Beschränkung des Blickwinkels im jeweiligen narrativen Kontext. Philip ben Jakimos, officer of Agrippa II, may be rescued from the tankle of contradictions and confusions in Josephus' accounts with his loyalty to the Jewish king and to Rome intact. Philip behaved strangely but never betrayed his patrons. He failed in his missions to suppress rebellions, first in Jerusalem and the in Galilee. The revolution defeated him. - D.J.H.
