Abstract: Ruiten, J.T.A.G.M. van in: JSJ 29.2 (1998), 117: "C. Begg compares Pseudo-Philo's Liber Antiquitatum biblicarum 12 with the biblical account on the "Golden Calf". He argues that there are positive indications for Pseudo-Philo's dependence on the Exodus story, whereas the affinities with Deut 9-10 might simply reflect his own creative reworking of the Exodus account. Although Phseudo-Philo, unlike Josephus, did not shy away from incorporating the ignominious incident into his history, he also did not hesitate so significantly rework it for his own purposes". Asen Ben A. in: OTA 21.3 (1998), 507: "Josephus omits retelling the Golden Calf episode. However, his presumed contemporary "Pseudo-Philo" does include a version of the incident (Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum [LAB], chap 12), but one which is markedly different from the accounts in Exod 32:1-34:28 // Deut 9:17-10:11. In this essay, B. compares LAB 12 and its scriptural sources and attempt to identify and elucidate the differences between them. Although Pseudo-Philo, unlike Josephus, did not shy away from incorporating the ignominious incident into his history, he also did not hesitate to "streamline" it and significantly rework it for his own purposes".
