Abstract: "The relatively small attention given to James the Lord's brother in the NT seems due to the type of Christianity that he represented, which had no place in a church quickly dominated by Gentile Christians. Analysis of the pertinent NT texts (especially in Acts and Galatians 2) indicates that James occupied a middle position between the Judaizers and Torah-rigorists on the one hand and Paul, Peter, and their ""enthusiastic"" opponents on the other hand. James' proposal to retain Torah-observance for Jewish Christians and to restrict the obligations of Gentile Christians was politically realistic. But his effort to hold together the saving significance of Jesus' death and resurrection with the ongoing validity of the Torah was in the long run unsuccessful. - D.J.H."
