Abstract: "In light of recent proposals identifying the genre of Acts as biography or historical novel, this study holds fast to the conviction that Luke is a historian and highlights the role of the so-called mission speeches as components of Luke' s historical writing. It first argues that Acts 10:34-43 and 13:16-41 are integral components of Luke' s depiction of decisive turning-points in the history of the church. Then it examines Dionysius of Halicarnassus' Roman Antiquities (books 11 and 7) and On Thucydides and concludes that the Lukan conception of the function of the mission speeches corresponds with the view of Dionysius that speeches indicate the direction of history (indeed, they function as the ai)ti/ai of events). Thus it may be concluded that Luke has been influenced by political history writing. Speeches with appeals to beginnings play a legitimizing role in both Luke and Dionysius. Luke' s work belongs in the area of historiography. - C.R.M."
