| Title: Jerusalem's Essene Gateway. Where the Community Lived in Jesus' Time Pages: "22-31, 64,66" Type: Generic Year: 1997 Abstract: "Harrington, Daniel J. in: NTAb 42,1 (1998) 110: The Gate of the Essenes (see Josephus War 5:145) was on Mount Zion at the southern end of the western section of the First Wall, just before it turned east across the Tyropoeon Valley toward Siloam. The earliest gate at this site led to the Essene quarter of Jerusalem on Mount Zion. This location has been established by recent archaeological excavations. // Urbrock, William J. in: OTA 20,3 (1997) 393: P. reports on his work during the last 20 years on remains of a gateway (first detected by Frederick Bliss in the 1890s) with three distinct levels inserted into an older wall (probably from Hezekiah's time), located at the southwest corner of Jerusalem. He identifies the earliest level as the Gate of the Essenes described by Josephus and presents other material evidence for the existence of an ancient Essene quarter within the walls adjacent to the gate. Many photographs and illustrations." Keywords: Archaeology, topography, local and regional history |
