| Title: Amaziah of Judah According to Josephus (Ant. 9.186-204) Secondary Title: Anton. Volume: 70 Pages: 3-30 Type: Journal Article Year: 1995 Abstract: JSJ 27 (1996), 192-193: "The article offers a detailed analysis of Josephus' adaptation of the Biblical accounts in II Reg 14,1-22 and II Chr 251-26,2. Begg concludes that Josephus did know both II Reg and II Chr but that it is impossible to determine which precise text form[s] he used for his Amaziah story. As to Josephus' rewriting techniques, Begg analyzes various instances of modification, rearrangement, omission and expansion of Biblical material. He notes that in this account Josephus does not "detheologize" the Biblical story, but rather amplifies divine intervention [9:199]. The depiction of the [Amalekite] enemies of Amaziah may be seen as a veiled allusion to Rome". Keywords: Antiquities |
