Abstract: "The revised and expanded version of a doctoral dissertation directed by P. Schäfer and accepted in 1990 by the Institut für Judaistik of the Free University of Berlin, this volume defines, analyzes, and compares messianic texts from Maccabean times to the Bar Kokhba period. After defining a messiah as a priestly, royal, or other kind of figure who plays a liberating role in the end-time, it analyzes messianic expectations before the Maccabees, from Judas Maccabeus to Pompey, from Pompey to Titus, from Titus to Bar Kokhba, and after Bar Kokhba, respectively. The analysis focuses on particular texts from the various periods, including the Qumran writings, the OT Pseudepigrapha, and the NT. It concludes with hermeneutical reflections on the understanding of "messiah" in this period. Oegema contends that we cannot speak of a messianic "idea" in Judaism but we can trace the historical trajectory of messianic expectations".
